Need help, Aggressive tank
Hello
I'm setting up a tank that will have 2 lionfish, 1 puffer, 1 snowflake ee 1 long spine urchin and maybe 1 sea goblin.
My question is about snails and crabs. Is there anything that will be safe with these fish as far as cleaners go?
Thanks in advance

Hi Diane, Welcome to the reef tank
Lion fish are usually not interested in snails tho YMMV, Some Puffers I would worry about a an eel, prolly not but the only hard fast rules I know are there are no hard, fast rules and Murphys a reefer, prolly didnt read cause he seems to inflict Murphys law on all of us at some point.
Sounds like you have the makings of a killer aggressive tank( no pun intended, hopefuylly its at least 180 preferablly 240 or bigger, with a really good skimmer and pretty good circulation to deal with the amount of fish poop they will generate

Thanks all
I't a 50g. The lions are dwarfs and the puffer is an Hawaiian Blue Puffer. I believe that is rated for a 50g. The snowflake eel is rated for a 50g also. I hope thats not to much to stuff into this small of a tank.
I have a pretty rinky dink skimmer. Guess I should look for a better one.
Tim, is that your Macaw? I have a blue and gold too.

Do a search for sea goblin on liveaquaria.com
Its a pretty cool fish but hard to come by.
Every time it comes in stock it goes out just as quick.

You will want a very strong skimmer and lots of flow to get the poop to the sklimmer. That realy is alot of messy eaters in a small tank. Are you planning on a sump? If so I would consider some extra LR for added bio-filtration also. HTH

Awhile back i had 2 lions and an eel in a 46 gallon tank. It can be done, but if you are planning on keeping corals OR having happy fish i dont recommend it. Even without corals, plan on spending a few hundred bucks on a skimmer and pump, or do a 25% water change twice a week, and still....the fish will not be comfortable, as well as you can plan on several other worm and or algae issues that will be the result of the massive feeding that those fish require. A predator tank like that would be great and pretty fun to keep......IF, like Doug says, youve got 4-6 times the tank capacity you do.
That is too many of the wrong kind of fish for a 50 gallon tank.
For what its worth.....i had no problem keeping snails and crabs.....until the feedings created a mutant worm that did all my crabs in.

Thank you every one. What a warm welcome.
I am going to have to rethink this.
I really wanted a lionfish and a puffer. Do you think I should drop the eel and one of the lions or sea goblin?
I do have a small sump but was only going to house food in it. I'm not sure how to work it with this tank. No holes in the bottom. Would I just gravity feed the water (siphon) from over the top side of the tank and use a pump to get it back up and over the top again.
It has a sand bottom of about 3 inches and a small amount of live rock. I have some more rock I will add to it tomarrow.
How hard or easy is it to train these guys to eat frozen foods. I don't want to have to always have live on hand if at all possible?
Thanks again to everyone for the impute.
Diane
