Need computer help (Windows ME)

I think there is a software compatibility problem with some of the programs that start automatically when I boot my computer. I get frequent lockups, blue screens, and incomplete shutdowns. Most of these are programs that I rarely or never use (Real Player, MusicMatch Jukebox). I don't want to delete the programs but I don't want them to start everytime I turn on the computer. How can I change it so that they don't automatically start?

I figured this is a simple change in the Windows configuration but I can't find it anywhere I've looked.

TIA.

Click on the START button on the lower left side of you screen.

Go to PROGRAMS

Go to STARTUP

The names of all the programs should be there that come on when you startup. RIGHT click on the name of the program you dont want to start and click DELETE. This will just delete the program from start up and not from your actuall hard drive.

Hope this works..

And my advice to you all together, is: Get rid of Windows ME.... fast.. very fast! Go with 2000 or XP Should solve a load of any startup related and compatability issues.

The only thing that was in there was Microsoft Office which I did delete from startup. There are still others though. I was shown how to do it in the past but I've forgotten.

Pull up the Start menu. Click on Run. type in "msconfig", hit enter. Click on the far right button which should be Startup. There are all the programs listed that startup when windows starts. You can uncheck the ones you dont want to start up with windows without deleting programs, files or registry keys. You'll notice a lot programs install their programs in their to boot up automatically causing your system to slow down a lot. You can check and uncheck these programs as needed. Hope that helps.

Sometimes its hard to go by wording, sand reef gave you an excellent step to removing your programs. You can simply uncheck those you dont want to startup. Most of them are self explanitory, but others have some funky names so be carefull on what your shutting down at startup Ya may need it later.

I attached a picture of where Sand Reef was pointing you. Good Luck.. and I still say Drop windows me It haunts PC users for life

Thanks Balakoth. I have had some trouble with ME but I think most of it came from the HP pre-loaded software. McAfee wasn't compatable with a lot of the other programs that were on the computer.

thanx for that pic balakoth. I agree about dropping winblows ME. Although I am still using winblows 98 SE. I will wait another few years until more bugs are found and fixed on XP before I think about upgrading

Good Ol Windows 98 SE Nothing wrong with that operating system other than it's Microsoft hah.

Ive noticed Mcafee doesnt seem to be compatiable with alot of new things Ive ran. Therefore I took it off. Norton seems to do alot better job and runs much more smoothly.

McAfee blows almost as much as Win ME... lol The 2 best AV programs out there that I know of (reasonably priced that is) are Nortons and Trend Micro PC Cillin. Personally I use PC Cillin because it happened to be the one I chose at the time. If I were to ever have a problem with it I would go with Nortons, I have seen both pick up viruss when other programs said the computers are clean. Also there is some sort of worm/trojan going around right now that none of the AV programs are picking up, my wifes computer has it and I get the fun job of reloading her whole system... lol Comes in on Jpegs and emails and just trashes the system.
