Welcome to The Reef Tank!
You may indeed get a reply from someone here that has one they wouldn't mind giving away
Do you have any LFS (Local Fish Stores) around your area that carry live rock? You might check with them, they could probably get you one from their shipments.
I checked Flying Fish Express, Marine Depot and Inland Aquatics online and didn't see any Mantis shrimp listed but most places do get them from time to time. You might even check with Tampa Bay Saltwater online, I know they run across a few in their live rock

Tell your LFS to order you an Odontodactylus scyllarus (I'm pretty sure I spelled it right ) - that is a peacock mantis shrimp, the pretty one.
If they can't get it (shame on them) you can order one from www.anchofish.com

Hurley-
Sadly, they don't ship well I think I recall Sara got one from a reef buddy a couple years ago, and it was a gonner when she received it. It was packed well, and with due care.
Methinks you're better off going to a LFS.

Its all in how and when you ship them, then again for what it cost to ship one cross country, you can find a shop that will order you a peacock mantis( the neat ones) Offer to prepay and pickup the day it comes in, and they should get it for you for cost plus 10% at the most. Keep looking till you find a store that will.
be aware that once its ordered it may be a while before the wholesaler can fill the order. I got one for the reefer Cath mentioned( after the freeze fiasco) and it took reordering it everyweek for a month
It finally showed up and it was a beautiful clown mantis about 6" and it cost me $25

Since you're in Placerville, you're not too far from Stockton. Call Twin's Aquarium (209) 472-0669. As of a couple of weeks ago, they had one in stock (the peackock kind). I was gonna buy it myself, but I like my clown fish too much to get rid of it. This is a large shrimp (5" or so) but it looked soooooo cool. The owner is John, and if he doesn't have one, he can order one for you. Good luck!
By the way, are you in a reef club? If not, check out this site for a Sacramento area club:
http://www.marineaquarist.org
I'm a member, and it's great. The June meeting will feature Bob Fenner as a speaker. Also, members get a 10% discount from many local dealers (including Twin's). Certain LFS give a 20% discount on different days of the month.
Tell John that Jason referred you and maybe he'll cut you a deal on the shrimp.
Good luck!

Freddie Joe-
I live in Spartanburg, near Charlotte. And I have no idea what kind it is. I've only seen it a couple of times, and that was a year ago or so. I'm not absolutely sure that it's a mantis, but the snap can be really loud, and I've mysteriously lost a couple of fish
