Nationwide power outage drill on Nov 13/14th...how will you prepare?

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/17/us...kout-blow.html

They're going to shut down large portions of the grid nationwide Nov 13 and 14th. Will you be prepared to keep your reef on life support?

I will get some battery aerators, but I'm wondering....for my moderately stocked 55 gallon softy tank (with barely any corals) (seven small fish like chromis, tailspot blenny, pygmy angel, gramma, banggai cardinal, and two clowns)....is there any way to 'wean' it off oxygen? I mean, to lessen it's oxygen consumption? Could I remove one powerhead and let some of the bacteria die off and see what happens?

Could one hypothetically keep a certain kind of setup in a 55g without requiring any power at all over the long term? What would that system look like? Has anyone set up an 'off grid' aquarium, and what would that look like?

This is a "simulated drill". No power grids are actually going to be taken off line. They are practicing to see if they will be ready if it did happen.

Ok according to the above link, no real power outages are planned to happen those days. But still! The original question still stands. How can we either prepare our tanks for a several-day off grid stint, or design a system that requires less oxygen in the case of a shorter term power outage?

Don't know how you can train your reef tank to use less oxygen, but for a short term shut down, I guess you could use either gas or battery back up generator systems. Any shutdown longer than a day, then we all will have a lot more to worry about than our our tanks, and I would be thinking "sushi".

LOL right!

I just wonder how to determine the minimum oxygen needed for a given system. I suspect we overdo it to a greater or lesser extent. Of course if you have tangs, they need higher oxygen levels, etc.

I suppose I could experiment...but its kind of an expensive experiment! Perhaps we could get people to chime in on accidental power losses, how long the power was out, how the tank was stocked, and whether or not ill effects were observed on the livestock. That'd be a good place to start.
