That's a pistol shrimp. You can tell by the lack of swimmerets and the one enlarged claw to make the popping sound.

I've kept mantis (and pistols) of many different species. The species that are common hitchhikers are NOT going to be able to break your glass. Heck....I grab them with my hand when I help people rid their tank of them. There are a couple of species that can break glass but I have never heard of them being a hitchhiker.
Additionally, it is quite true that many species will color up as they age. However, there are also numerous species that will remain quite drab as an adult. I just don't want you to be disappointed.
