My Hydnophora is a ^$#%#^&#&^
My large hydno fell last week on top of this awesome 7 headed green hammer ive got. I watched it happen so it was only on him for a few seconds tops, but i had to pick pieces of hydno out of his heads.......
I was gone all day yesterday, and when the lights came on this morning, to my dismay 4 of the 7 heads were nothing but bare skeleton and slime.
I HATE that thing sometimes
Hopefully the other three are ok....i was pretty surprised to see 4 dead this morning ans only 2 heads really took the hit........

yeah its definitley not the first casualty at its hands....the thing is prolly 10" tall and 8" around, it is encrusted competely on top of a 3 or 4 pound rock. When i moved all of my stonies out of the tank in question a couple of weeks ago i moved him and didnt do it with enough precaution making sure he was stable. Here is kind of a cool pic of him a couple of months back wehn i ticked him off......
I named the pic: "Got Carbon??"

I must admit...i kind of like him. he is this large menacing presence in the tank. DO notice i left him in my lps/softy tank and didnt move him over with the rest of my stonies.
He really does seem more like a lps than a sps anyway..............

I've always been told they are a LPS too.
I really like mine as well, I glued it to a big rock though so it can't fall, now it's nicely encrusted (bought as a frag) I was thinking about breaking it off and putting it in my Softie tank to keep the xenia in check.

on the LPS vs SPS designatioin, just as an aside there is no such designation either as anatomical or taxonomic for SPS or LPS in the coral science literature, although the appearance of the large single polyped corals that can exist as singe polyps (phaceloid and corallites > 4mm in dia) would tend to be somewhat a means of defining what LPS is within the hobby...
I have a coral that can handle the Hydnophora spp and win...
Melissa in Atlanta has a frag of it I believe, as does Roger Danley in florida

I have notes on a possible ID at home, rather interesting structure of the branches and positioning of the corallites, not a Hydnopora spp., but was sold to me as a blue hydnophora. It originally was a silver-blue, but has colored up under MH to a nice silvery pink, I may position a frag or two in a lower light area to see what develops. Polyps extend at night almost like a milipora but the cross section of the branch is triangular... unusual encrustation at the base...
better pix in a few days.

As it gets bigger, the longer branches will split once or twice, but primary growth is for the base to get bigger, then form vertical branches. I have a ton of notes on this at home and a few guesses at possible ID, but I will end up doing a piece of the skeleton in a hot caustic bath to remove the tissue and some microscopy to ultimately ID it, that just has not been a priority as of late...
