My 180 in process
I have set everything up now on my 180 reef except the UV, which I still need to purchase. Any suddgestions?? Looking at a gamma...
I have how completed my water seal test and everything looks good. No leaks after a few minor adjustments to piping.
The question that I have is the closed loop system that I have is not very powerfull. I would have thought that a little giant with 500 gph would be decent?
Let me explain the setup,
The center of my tank has 3 drilled holes along with the other ones I have that go to my sump etc.
The center hole is a return line that goes straight into the pump that then goes back out to a t conection to two lines that exits back into the tank for flow. Just doesn't seem like alot. Is there something that I'm doing wrong, hardware issue(used) or is it just not anought for system????
Thanks,
Jetski

For a 180 gallon CLS and depending on what you are keeping you will want from 3500 gph to over 7,000gph flow
I have a CLS powerd by a Sequence dart with about 3500 GPH flow through 4 return nozzles and a spray bar bar. The spray bar sees about 1600 GPH and each of the nozzles see about 400 gph. This is in a mixed softie and LPS tank.
The fish and corals love this flow!
What are your plans and we can help some more!

110galreef, nice looking tank..........
Softies should be what I'll be doing, and some LPS in the higher light areas too.
This is not the best way to show it, but it gives yo the best idea of how it it set up for flow. The 500 just seems so week.......

Yeah 500 gph is way to little. What size is the the bulkhead now feeding the cls pump??
Most larger CLS pumps will need like a 1.5" bulkhead at least or 2- 1.25" to a 1.5" feed line if not 2" line!
With primarily softies I'd say get a Sequence Dart. Do you plan on redoing the CLS
Also tank appears to be glass? So redrilling may not be the best option? And may have to work with what you have.

I really did not plan on redoing it, But could easily as it is not PVC. Thou it is glass so don't plan on redrilling anything. I believe they are 1" bulkheads if that helps

you'll have to find higher flowing pumps that fit the bulkhead size.
Mag pumps may be the ideal...
Like the mag 36. I think it runs on 1" feed

Being that I'm running 2 pumps(500 and a 1000GPH), do I need to replace them both and if yes should they be different GPH for a 180G tank???

Think of the CLS and the return sump pumps as two completly separate systems.
The key to the return sump pump is to match the flow of your skimmer mostly. So the 1000 GPH will be about right or a little high (which will be OK) depending on the skimmer! You jut don't want to flow a lot more than your skimmer processes. You can put a ball valve on the pump if needed as well. Or you ca buy a pump to match the skimmer flo if you so desire. But really don't nees to.
The CLS is for nothing more than flow.
Also second thought on the CLS pump. The Mag's really aren't designed to be used externally but have been w/o issues. I'd actually say get the biggest Quiet One pump ...I believe it is the 6,000, which flows about 2800gph I think plus has a 1" inlet.
Some others may chime in on pumps but you want an exteranl pump w/ a 1" inlet and that flow around 3,000 GPH!
Hope this helps!

Also FWIW...my CLS pump is abput 3600 gph and my return sump pump is about 600 gph and my skimmer processes about 500 gph!
The whole point of the CLS is to allow me a total of over 4,200 GPH (3600 + 600) yet not have to flow 4200 GPH through my sump!

Ive got a genx 40 that I had laying around and used that for my closed loop. It does a pretty good job but I probably wouldve gone a little bigger. I mainly have softies and lps but my cls outlets are coming from up above so I can point them toward the dead spots in the tank
