moving tanks

Hello

When moving from a a 50gal to 72, how much substrate should I also move to the new tank? or should I buy new substrate. for it or 1/2 and 1/2? Also how much water should i use out of the old tank? And any tips on what order I should do this in? or easy way how to get the substrate out? I have never done this big of a move before and don't want to mess it up.

how old is the 50?
more than a couple months, get mostly new sand and just add a little bit to seed it.

the rest is easy, take your time

I usually put all the fish/coral in 1-2 buckets
rocks into a utility tub
then drain the first tank, save as much water as you want
but after you see what it looks like after you take the rocks out, you'll want all fresh water

you shouldn't get much of a cycle as long as you keep the rocks under water as much as possible

great, the 50 is approx. 1 yr old. How long can the fish and corals stay in a bucket for? Won't the tank have to settle for 3-4 days from water going over top of the substrate?

not if your careful
you can rinse the dust out before you put the new sand in
then place a big bowl and saucer on top and pour your newly mixed water into the bowl
this should minimize the sandstorm

if you want to keep the fish out long term (1-2 days)
I'd suggest a 10 gal with a power head and heater
