More plumbing help...

OK either I stink at search or this question is so stupid it has never been asked.

The drain line to the sump, should it be under the water line or above the water line. I was told 1" below the water line, but how does this work? Right now I have it roughed in about 1" above the water and it is rediculously loud.

as close to the line as possible but not unsubmerged. Best bet is to start short and then add a union, test it out, and then add more pipe onto the union as is necessary.
