moonlighting

So what is the general concensous when it comes to moonlighting. I've read that some think its bad, some think its good etc etc. I was thinking about adding 2 LEDs to my system, of the right wavelength of course, and am trying to come up with the best way of going about doing it.

I don't like how whole tanks light up bright as hell as night, but was over at a buddies house where he mounted them underneath the reflector to his compact lights. Just enough light from the LEDS were able to get out so that you could see the bottom of the tank have a sort of "ripple" effect. I thought it looked really cool

Let me know what you guys think and maybe some suggestions for parts. . .

well i sorta like th elook of them but sorta dont.
unless you can really link them to the moons phase they are not doing anything, but being a night light for ya. So many like them so many hate them. i don't think i have really seen any Info on the pros for them at all . If you look in the archive section in the lighting area nad the Dis. of the week area i belive you will find a bunch of threads on it

I agree with Tim, I've seen pros and cons on the lunar lights. Personally I use them for all my tanks, and I like them because they look cool, but I don't think they've harmed anything or caused any tank issues. Every thing is thriving in the tanks.....

I have found that I don't like them and have them all turned off on what tanks have them , If I want to view the tank after dark I may turn them on for awhile. But other then that I think they are just for looks and really don't do any good, just an added cost

has anyone ever tried red lunars? so the fish cant see it like a red lense flashlight, but so you can observe all the crazies that come out at night?

first of all, moonlight is not blue, it is the same spectrum as the sun. the moon is just a reflector of the sunlight. our eyes perceive it as blue since it is below the light levels that our cones can distinguish colour. our eyes switch over to the B&W rods. since we are not used to seeing this way we think that it is blue.

blue is also such a hard colour for our eyes to pick up that the LED's seem dimmer than they actually are. the critters in our tanks have eyes very sensitive to the blue spectrum. to them those blue LED's are like Q-beams in the tank. red on the other hand is not only difficult for our eyes to pick up, but impossible for some of the critters to pick up at all. red would be a better choice for a light to see the goings on in the tank. i use a small red LED flashlight for nighttime spot viewing.
