Mollies
Can I put Mollies in my tank before the LR and cycle the tank with them in there? I want to keep them in there and add extra salt to get them to the same salinity as my saltwater fish. That will be great, my favorite tropical fish with my new passion saltwater. These aren't just black mollies though they are black molly lyertails.

it would be pretty rough on them to have to adjust to both salinity and the cycle
you could set them up in another temporary tank and raise their salinity at the same time you wait out the cycle in the salt tank

Please don't use live fish of any kind to cycle your tank. It's cruel and unnecessary. Just drop a piece of frozen raw shrimp in your tank. As it decomposes, bacteria necessary to cycle your tank will accumulate.

If you're doing LR you don't really need the shrimp either.

I believe he wants to keep the Mollies even after the tank is cycled, BUT I do agree, don't use them to cycle the tank. I did It when I first started, out of ignorance. That was just the way I was told to cycle the tank.
My advice would be to add the mollies after, If you want them in your tank. It seems like a lot of money so spend on equipment to keep mollies, when they are perfectly happy in FW.
dislcaimer: take my advice with a grain of salt. I am still in the beginning stages if aquiring wisdom, and have little to share.

I can see having mollies in saltwater tank as I think they do very well. When I had fresh water I alway liked them also and have had them in salt water. I can remmber the days of wall to wall tanks Fresh and saltwater

I am not a he. I'm a wife of 21 years, and mom of three teenagers. My husband is getting sucked into all of this a little at a time. I will hold the mollies out till it cycles. I don't want to put them thru too much. I want other saltwater fish as well I just like the thought of having them in the same tank. I know I can't put them in now since I learned the rock I am going to get is uncured. It will have to be after it cycles. No problem though.

Sorry, My bad. It has happened to me as well.
I had mollies when I set up my first tank while I was in high school. They are colorful, but it has been a long time since I have had a community tank. Maybe thats why I never gave them any thought for my saltwater tank.

No problem. I guess I will just do it after the cycle is over. I haven't gotten lights, or heater yet. After that the LR will come.
