Midas Blenny

I've been reading aobut these fish lately. Thinking about putting one in my reef. The LFS has one in now. He came in yesterday but is really really brown. I asked to lfs guy that was there and he said they are always that colour.
Now I know that isn't right because Ive seen pictures and they wouldn't be called midas for no reason.
Midas=gold

Anyways, I'm gonna watch him for the next few days to see if he brightens up, livens up. He was breathing a bit hard it seemed and just sitting on the ground not moving a whole lot.
You think that the colour is due to stress from being shipped or are they sometimes just brown?

Midas' take shipping pretty hard. I'd let the lfs hold on to him for a week or two. It's likely that he's dark because of stress and also if very small. But everything I've read says they're bad shippers but hardy if they live through the shipping process!

just my $.02

i have one I got a few months ago, I was disappointed with his color at first, but now he definitely has a goldish hue to him. He seems to change his coloring a bit due to mood, stress etc. so I would think the one at the LFS would 'color up' as well

2 things.

Midas usually are Peach in color with a darker mode for stress. At night they have blue like marking on their heads and sides. Let the fish store keep him for a while and see if he lightens up.

Second, They will jump out. If you don;t have a lid or eggcrate ontop your tank you will eventually lose it. I can bet on it. I now keep a BiColored blenny just as cool but not as colorful as a Peach blenny.

Good luck.

Hey
thanks for the advice. My tank has an eggcrate cover. I was at the LFS today and he's still there. I asked them to hang on to him for a few days for me. He seemed a little lighter but the breathing seemed harder. His eye and belly seemed to have some blue coming in. He's not active at all though. Just kinda sitting there.
I think that I heard that they will hide out for awhile while getting used to a new tank.

I like those bi-colour blennies too. A few came in the other day but didn't look healthy.
One had white vertical lines on it? ever see anything like that?

I had one - he jumped, so eggcrate or something would be a good idea.

Oh, and they aren't really active fish - much more interested in finding a nice perch and watching the world go by. They're actually kind of funny and interesting that way - you can play "find the blenny." I would probaby get another one, as they're nice little fish.

I've seen some that are uglier, some that look nicer ... but both seem to change color depending on mood [weirdly discolored after they wake up].

I very much liked mine, great personality, mine swam in the water column fairly often.
Always watching me watch him, just a great fish.

I dunno why yours is so brown, though I have seen some others that were that way too at the LFS ... I dunno. When I see another one that looks good, I'm replacing my old one - one of my favorite fishes.
