Heck yeah, go taller. It will make light acclimation easier (as well as maintenance)

Here's a couple articles on the reflector types I listed... One of them is on the Lumenbrights and mounting height (use the same heights for the Lumenmax Elites) and the other is on the reflector output efficiency and light cone..

OK, change in plans.

My brother has decided to move back to Georgia and he needs a bit help in the money department. (Moving from CA) Being the good brother I told him I will help him out. Money is tight with him being a single dad and all. Good news is I will get to see him more often as well as my nephew.

But anyways. My budget was really just about cut into a 1/4 of what it was so for now I need to come up with a little less aggressive approach to lighting.

I was wondering if a single 250w MH would cover the whole tank or maybe even 1 150W or should I be looking into getting 2 150w lights? I am still going to get some the good reflectors and lights but right now I can not cover the hole operation and I really don't want to put the project on hold.

It will be a FOWLR tank anyways with my current mushrooms and richordia and thats about it. I figured the worst that would happen is I would have to put my current stock in the middle of the tank under the light if it was good to go with 1 light. I would like to stick with the MH because ultimately I will be getting some more further down the road.

I honestly don't know the area of the tank the single light would cover. I obviously need light to fuel the LR and would like it to all be covered but don't know if 1 light will do the trick.

If you are thinking 2 150's you may as well go with 250's there really isn't that much additional cost between the two.. I don't think you can get away with one light unless you like a black line running through the center of the tank

That is what I was afraid of. Your right about the price. i just looked on reefgeek again and they are the same price. Do you think I could get away with using just 1 250W?

This is what I was going with anyways but maybe now just 1.

yep.. no matter what, if you are going to use MH you are going to get a black bar from the center brace. The only way to avoid this is to move away from a point light source to a wide light source such as T5's

Ok, gonna help you out here.. they aren't as efficient as the electronic ballasts, but they are decent ballasts, and it is a 2x250 output.

http://www.reefgeek.com/product/Blue_Wave_2_2x250W_Metal_Halide_Ballast_(Pulse_Sta rt)_by_Sunlight_Supply

and these for your reflectors:

Alos, this combo is EXCELLENT for Radium bulbs
