Metal Halide Help

OK

Sorry So Long

My tank is is 20" Tall 18" wide and 60" long. I was told it held about 120g. I have had it for about 3 months now. I have 150# of southdown sand, crushed coral, live sand, cruched oyster shells, and about 3 bags of the blue grean and aqua fake fresh water stone all mixed up as my substrate. It is 2" deep in front to 6" deep in back. I have 2 hagen 802 powerheads. A Magfloat.
100# of homemade live(but dead) rock. I have about 33# of live rock. I plan on adding another 20# or so this weekend. I have 1 blue/yellow tail damsel. I know, but he seems verry well manered and docile and I just don't have the hart to get rid of him. I have a Yellow tang about 4". I Have a 5" Fox Face. Surprisingly the foxface and tang are real good buddies.

side note I love the fox face, at night when I turn the lights out he will snuggle up close to one of the rocks and change colors to blend in with the rock! Also he will put his nose up and just barely move his side fins, sorta hover.

Anyway I digress. 22 snails. need more. 10 crabs. need more. 1 serpant star(hitched a ride with the live rock). I also have 1 Hippopus Clam. 1 Button Pollup. 1 Xenia Colony. Lastly 1 Zoanthid Colony. Oh 10g sump with skimmer Using one of those Beckett waterfall pumps from lowes as return pump. using kalkwaser, carbon, phosban, totalreef. ph 8.4 am 0 ni >0 NA >0 I have speriodic deitrious outbreaks. Dont know if its the lights or not. I know They are not helping. The tang and foxface have really big bellies{;<) Plan on getting about 40 more snails and 50 more crabs. maybe this weekend. Eventually going to add a Fuge with sandbed, Mangroves, shrimp, maybe a seahorse after its real stable. Only if I can find a tank raised one.

I had this tank given to me. It had set out in a garage for 3 or 4 years and was fixin to be thrown out because the cabinet was rotten. Rebuilt the cabinet. I have been getting by with 3 metal halide 100w lights. really yellow no color to any of the corals or clam. SOooooooooooooooooooooooo wife has fell in love with foxface and nemo movie. she wants a clown fish. I told her I had to have better lights before I bought nemo or the clown fish would die{:<)

Hellolights shipped today
2 x 96w cf ballast & 2 x actinic square pin bulbs
2 x 250w MH Ballast & 2 x 20,000k XM Bulbs
2 x Mogul sockets with Bracket
2 x 4.5" fans
60" Reflector
All the cords clips etc.

Now my questions{:
Right now the 100w MH's are mounted in a oak canopy that realy needs replaced. It is only 5" high and the lights are only about 4 " from the water. I know saftey hazard. OK. Should I build a new oak canopy. If I did, in able to have the lights 10" off of the water were talking about maybe a 15" or 16" canopy. If so where is the best place to put the fans? I am HVACR certified, however I run powerplants so I am a bit rusty on the application. I can see the benefit of having the fans Blowing cold air in and having a oak floor register or maybe 2 in the top to let the hot air out. But I can see the advantage of having the Fans Draw the Hot air out and the cold air in through the top.

I Also have Flirted with the Idea Of building my own little AZO light like setup. I have access to a Metal Brake(bends metal). I could verry easily build a 60" long metal hanging Pendant.

On the same Note I could build an Oak Hanging Pendant as well. It would match the Cabinet the Aquarium sits on. I need input. Please help me out. Thanks, Clay.

Nice! I like the way you persuaded your wife!
I would put the fans on the ends. Maybe to small fans!

Wow! lots of info.

you should have the fans blow out. this way it draws in cool air from all around. if you blow in some of the hot air never really leaves. unless the canopy is airtight around the tank and back wall you will not need a fan blowing in to equalize the pressure.

i think the hanging idea is better. it will make the canopy look a lot less clunky. it will not need to be as tall. you could keep it slimline and float it above the tank.

metal would be cool, but you will have to watch the corrosion.

Lights

Yeah I am leaning toward building a Oak Hanging Canopy. Two Main Reasons. One is less clutter, easier to feed fish etc. the other is heat. I dont want there to be a problem with the tank getting to hot this summer. I live in ALABAMA. I already bought a small Window unit A/C when they went on close out at lowes just in case my den gets to hot. I also Piped In a Return to my main hvac system in a nearby study. Hopefully I wont need a chiller. Right now with the cano[py and the 3 100w MH my temp is 78 F . Do you think i should remote mount the ballast or mount them in the Hanging Hood? I guess I still need the fans even though its not going to be on top of the tank(if I Hang it)? Have you ever seen those Oak floor Vents? I am Thinking I will put 2 of them in the top of the fisture right above the lights. This will let some of the radiant heat out, plus allow plenty of draft for the fans to pull air in across the hottest part, the bulbs. What do yaw think?
