Metal Halide distance above water

Taking into consideration safety and optimal lighting performace, what are your opinions regarding the best distance between the water's surface and the location of the MH bulb?

For 250's in a canopy I prefer about 9" with a light that has a decent output,.. down to 6 with 12K on up bulbs,.. or 150's.

i should state it is 10" from the bottom rounded part of the bulb to the water. not 10" from the top of the bulb
