What kind of media would be best for a reef aquarium? I used to use dechlorinated tap water until I realized that it contained a lot of phosphates (only about a week ago) and am in the process of doing small water changes with DI water I bought from the store. I am using activated carbon and found out through this site that it can let some of the contaminates back in after only a day or so.

most agree that using water purified with a RO/DI filter is the best place to start. using one of these and monitoring it on occasion to make sure the membrane is good is the best place to start when making up water. some LFS will sell made up water. most of these use an RO/DI filter when they make up the water, but it is a good idea to ask, just to make sure. when using water from a LFS make sure to test it before adding it to your system. they are usually made up much lower than what some people keep thier reef systems at.
