maxima clam

Hello all,

Can I keep a maxima clam under a 96w smartlamp? My LFS had two and one died from lack of light and whatever else. He may be able to make me a good deal since he has had for a few weeks and lost one.

Thanks,

I have had a baby for a quite a few months now in my 29 gallon with 3x55watt pc's has shown good growth was about 1.5 inches and is now about 2- 2.5 inches and looks great opens beautifuly is one of my prize peices in the tank I do realize that clams this size rely mostly on food I add Kents Cromoplex once a week and use kents tech-CB parts A and B one capful of each daily to maintain my CA and ALK levels. as the clam grows you will need more Light from what I am told though. Mine will be moving to a 75 gallon with 2x250 20k MH's in 6 months or so I hope anyway :P

I have a baby maxima too. While it's true that they rely heavily on feedings when small, lighting is still important. With only 96 watts over a 38g that's not even 3 watts per gallon. Also, you have an emerald crab and shrimp in the tank. There is a good chance the crab or shrimp would pick on the clam.
One other thing to consider, if the LFS has had one die, and they don't seem to know or care how to properly care for clams, there is the possibility that the clam will be sick and/or dying when you buy it.
I'd pass.
Sorry
