Maxi Jet vs Rio

I just changed the pump on my AquaC Remora from the Rio 800 to the Maxi Jet 1200. What a difference! It runs so much quieter and smoother. I wish I knew this when I first set it up. The overflow box is a little bigger, but the difference is worth it.

In fact, my wife was concerned that the skimmer was not working because it was so much quieter.

I will never buy a Rio again, I am sold on the Maxi Jet.

Some rios (Mostly the higher ends it seems) tend to have some bad horror stories. I know people who have had no problems with them.

Personally, I find them loud. Maxi Jets are a whisper compared to a rio compared in size. I have 3 900s and mostly only hear the water rippling.

Also. The one rio that is running my Bak Pak and that I recently took out were not UL listed. Maxi Jets are.

Oh yes, standard Maxi Jet Suction cups are excellent. My rios constantly fell off the glass until I got a few different cups for them.

Cam Bar- There is a venturi kit you can buy for the MJ for just a song. Really easy to convert it,and the difference in quality as well as peace of mind is worth it to change all of yours. If $$ is a factor (as it is for all of us here ) change them out one at a time. Or...use the ole plastic payment.

I bought mine from Premium Aquatics, and now I use the Rio to mix salt water. No need in wasting the power head, just don't use it in your tank.

Get a Maxi Jet 600 / 900 / 1200 and a venturi kit from Premiumaquatics.com for the BakPak Mod. May have to get some diff tubing from homedepot to make the two pipes fit. But its worth it.

I thought all Maxi-jets are powerheads. Jeff's had a sale recently on them and I bought two for circulation(1200's). One is absolutely quiet and the other makes a buzzing noise. After hearing the cons on Rio's, I recently changed out my 2500 on my skimmer. I didnt' want to take any chances, since I've got thousands invested in my tank. I'd better spend a $100 on a new pump. I must say, I've never had any problems with my Rio's, and all are over 2yrs old. But why take that chance.
