maroon clown pair
I have a maroon gold striped clownfish and someone told me that if I buy another one of a different size that they would fight at first but would eventually pair up. Is this true or do you have to just get lucky and hope they pair up?

Clowns are all male till breeding age then the largest one present in a given group will become a female and the next largest will pair up. Usually it works that way in a tank given the right ages and size difference but clown courtship esp among Premnas can be rather brutal and not always successful, Good luck

K,
I would suggest that you either not attempt to pair the one you have now... or go get 2 that are already paired up. The Maroons are ones of the hardest clowns to pair up. If you're attached to the one you have now... then if you really want to try to pair it up, find one that is half the size you have now... and put him in a separate container when introducing him and see how yours react.

Hi this is Johnny and I have heard if you have one clownfish you should get a smaller one and they may pair up. I believe the larger one will be the female.
I have a bonded pair of maroon clownfish and they are awesome. The female is larger than the male and darker color. I paid $50 for the pair and well worth it, I love them. They don't have an ananome to go to but they do fine without one.

Hi- I am raising maroon clownfish and have been successful three times now in creating a pair. Your clown is probably female, hopefully and adult female so there will be less bickering about sex roles. (doesn't really matter at this point, if not female now , it will become so.) Get a really small tank raised maroon clown if possible. (About 1 inch long is nice) Create a small hide away with rocks for him to escape if needed. When you add him the female may initially chase but I have found that if small enough they may get accepted right away. Be sure to use a tank cover to prevent jumping and if the new guy gets chased to the top and he just hangs there, consider removal. Maroon clown pairs may take a while before starting to spawn- from my info I have heard up to 3 yrs. My one spawning pair took 1 1/2 yr. The other two pairs are not spawning yet. Good luck.

My daughter want a clown fish and so does my wife. They dont like the same kind though. One likes the bright ones the other the darker colors. Can different clown fish be mixed in a 30 or 55 gallon reef tank?

Jay,
I suggest you don't put two different kinds of clownfish together in that size tank. They will likely fight to the death. What kinds are they looking at? How about having a separate tank for each one of them? Then you get to have your own tank w/ your own fish.

I dont have the names handy. My daughter likes the normal ones you always see:Orange with 3 white stripes, My wife likes the Maroon clown fish with yellow stripes. I will just get one kind if there might be a problem. This is my first salt water tank. I wanted a small reef with a couple of fish. My tank is the 180 gal African cichlids that I made. lol, maybe Ill turn it into saltwater at a later date.
