Mantis Shrimp Help!!!!
Hi all,
I just discovered that I have a 3-4 inch Mantis shrimp in my live rock. Ive found one of his borrows but dont know where the others are. The rock is at the base of the tank so I cant move it. How should I get rid of the shrimp? Its already taken my clown and has left the rock before lookin for more prey. The only other tank inhabitants are a white cheek tang, a damsel and a cleaner shrimp. Please help!!!!!
Adam

there are fish traps out there
I'd say get a pop bottle and put some food in it. Make sure he can fit in it then lean it up to the rock so that it can climb in but won't be able to climb out.
I've heard people have success with this but you may catch some hermits first and itmight be a few nights before you get the guy.
if you have a qt I'd get the fish in there.
Hopefully you can nab him
good luck with that one!

bump just means bring to the top of the list.
This forum's topics are posted in order of latest reply/post to oldest.
If no one responds in enough time, your intial post will eventually end up pages down, and not as many people will even see it.
So, to bump means, to move to the top of the list again.
But the bigger problem...the mantis shrimp.
I don't know (other than the pop bottle idea) what to do to get him out, however I DO know you need to get him out ASAP! These guys will wreak havok on your tank, and in record time. And while I'm not sure of the validity, they have been rumored to actuall crack/break the tank glass.
do whatever you need to do to get him out, and IMMEDIATELY!
(hopefully someone on here will have better answers as to how)

i've had luck with the soda bottle thing. i just embedded it in the sand a bit so that it was sloped with the opening higher. they can't get a grip on the glass (or plastic). i think that chopped shrimp supper for the fishies is not a bad idea.

Keep in mind that mantis can swim, and he may be able to swim back out of the bottle. If you catch him, there are plenty of people out there that will buy him from you. I have one in a species tank and love him. They're absolutley fascinating when you can enjoy them and not worry about them killing your fish. If you don't want to keep him for yourself, check out the mantis shrimp forum on Reefcentral.com. There's always someone looking for a mantis.

Mantis are pretty cool...I had one for a while in a species tank, a little clubber. I may get one again at some point...but not for a while...the trap sounds good, as would baiting him with some food and trying many many ways to trap them (they're incredibly smart...so watch out), and they're not nicknamed "Thumbsplitters" for no reason.

If you know what rock it's in, even if it's on the bottom, get the rock out and bust it up til he comes out. It will be worth the effort. How much livestock can you afford to lose is the question? I tore half my tank apart about three months ago and the mantis was out within an hour of me noticing it. Traded him for some true blue shrooms later that night. I'm sure you can get your rock back together.

I just caught one in my tank last weekend, but fortunately I had decided to reaquascape and just removed his rock. I bobbed the rock/hole at the top of the waterline in a 5-gallon bucket and he kept coming out and charging me. Dang... they're mean and FAST!
Ultimately I netted him... and flushed him. But sort of wish he would have taken care of my elusive damsel before I caught him!
Good luck!

wow freaky. i know im jepordizing my livestock but I just cant take the rock out. Its under about 65 pounds of rock and wedged in really tight. I tried to move it and the shrimp came out charging and nearly got me. Ill just have to try the inverted coke bottle thing.
P.s. If anyone wants him after i catch him they can have him for free. That or he becomes fish food !!!!
thanks for the help more advice is still welcome!!!
