Mantis Shrimp!!!
Hey guys, Ive got another situation in which I can really use your input.
A week ago, I saw something really strange in my tank that I know I didnt purposely put in there. I suspected it was a small mantis shrimp.
Today, I saw it on a rock. It was pretty small, but im certain its a mantis. Luckily, it was on a loose piece of live rock and was inside a small hole. I slowly grabbed the rock and pulled it out of the tank. Im about 90 percent sure its still inside the live rock.
Now, the rock is in a bucket with salt water. I am looking inside the hole, but do not see the shrimp, but im pretty sure hes inside the rock.
How do I get him out?
Thanks!!
D.

pour soda into the hole (dont know if I would try this one). or dip the rock into water with specific gravity 1.035, or dip rock into freshwater. (just stuff Ive read, not stuff Ive tried!)

simply take the rock out and suspend it over a bucket or something. He will eventual come out to investigate why there is no water.....BINGO!

What will you do with it once it's out and IDed as a Mantis? They aren't reef friendly but they are really fascinating creatures in a species tank of there own. If you don't want it please try to adopt it out to someone that might appreciate it for the fascinating creature it is.

15" inches!!!
Please say this was caught in the wild and was not a hitchiker.
During my research I found and intersting newspaper clip of a mantis shrimp attacking a fisherman.
http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/pics...llershrimp.gif
A quote from the same site states that "The force of the strike of a large Californian species approaches that of a 22 caliber bullet, and is capable of breaking double layered safety glass."
Scary stuff...
