Mangroves

Time to take a breather from the bashing Im taking in the think tank, lol....

I have 12 mangroves in my fuge, they are not nearly large enough to have an impact on my water quality yet(i guess..)...

Has anyone kept them for a lengthy period and documented a change for the better in water quality?

Is there a definitive answer to how many you need? i.e...mangrove per gallon...

Is this a passing fad or is there evidence they do anything?

I think they look interesting and I believe the theory of nutrient removal s sound...but again, any studies on this? Anybody read anything?

I think Garf has some documented notes on the use of Mangroves. I have one in my fuge that is starting to get it's first leaf. I need 4 or 5 more. Can you send me some?

Is it just me or is the garf site extremely difficult to navigate through? I go there and get so mad that I can't find what I want that I have to leave. Each page has different buttons or no buttons at all.

mangroves are extremely slow growing, so with that in mind they are extremely slow at removing nutrients.

I've heard the slow-growing thing, but I bought one two months ago with 2 leaves and now it has 8, so I'm impressed. I've seen something where they claim you'd need (or maybe they just suggest) like 1plant/5 gallons of water, but don't know where the info came from. They may or may not help with filtration, but I think they are cool. Mine already has tubeworms on the trunk and zoanthids around the base. I think I'll start a mangrove swamp!

You might want to refrain from posting when you've been drinking. Sorry I couldn't resist.

Ha! Drinking maybe, but only in making light of myself in jest. That is a good thread and I made legitamte points that alot of people think but never say. I have posted a pix of my toilet there if a wanna see, ill be adding more pix...

OK mangroves...yes, I like the idea of them getting to be niced sized with lifeforms growing on the base. I am suspect as to how much nutrient they remove, but they definatley cant hurt...Since I change my water infequently, I think I will be able to notice if the groves remove tratres at a significant level...I have to start testing more.. They do look neat...

Exclamation

I think the mangroves are a cop out for not cleaning his tank. Most of us use them as a helping hand, not the actuall maintenance man! There is no subsitute for regular maintenance!!!!!!!!!

I have two mangroves in my refugium. Hopefully I'll have some more in the future. (Next chance I have to go to the keys ) They are very slow growing. I've had them for a month and a half and seen no growth on one and a few roots on the other.

Well darn it, I was going to give you the link to an article in Advanced Aquarist magazine, but anyway, it's the April 2002 issue. Here the magazine:

By the way Melissa, what kind of light are they under? I've had one under a 250W Sunburst MH for two months and it has four more leaves (now 6) and the terminal bud is about to unfurl two more!
