Mangrove Trees

Hi Everyone, I purchased a mangrove tree and the gentleman sent me 10 of them! They are about 8 - 10 inches tall, are a rooted cutting and have a couple of leaves on top. I cannot use 10 of them.. If any of you would like one and have something to trade, let me know, I would be most happy to share! :frank: Julie

Mangroves are another way to pick up excuse nutrients in a tank in a nut shell. I am sure that Jerel or Chris or many other people can give you a better explaniation for what they do.

I have some in my overflow, I had the great idea of putting them in my sump, but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet. I do know you can put them in a vase of tank water... a little different office plant than a philodendron.

I seem to recall reading a rather lengthy article on mangroves that said they were excellent at removing nutrients from your water but to really be on par with a well-stocked macroalgae tank you need to keep on the order of one mangrove for every 2 gallons of system capacity. Sounded like a very busy sump to me. I think the point was, if you're adding one or two mangroves to a good sized reef, do it because you think mangroves are cool, not as an attempt to filter your tank.
