mangrove tree

just got an eight inch red mangrove from the wholesaler! right now its in a glass in a window with four inches of live sand. when it gets bigger ill prolly put it in my fuge if it can take up a significant amount of nitrate. if not ill put it in a tank outside relying on natural sunlight and put in a few fish inverts, idk ill have fun with it.
so anyone else out there have one or know if it will take up a significant amout of nitrate?

from what I hear it takes a large amount of these to make a dent in filtering

when keeping mangroves in SW it is important to spray the leaves off nearly everyday. the mangroves export salt from their structure out through the leaves. they rely on rain to wash this off. if not done regularly the mangrove will drop those leaves that are not getting cleaned. eventually the mangrove will die because of no leaves. of course this is not a problem if kept in FW.

Bemo has a mangrove grove in his fuge and loves it. you do need to clean the salt off but it isn't too hard to do.

even if it is true that they only take nutrients from the substrate that is fine because your DSB is a phosphate/nitrate sink so it will still help.

Bemos tank looks great... what else can i say.

Im also told if you have quite a few of them they will impact your mag by absorption. Im sure its not alot but it is a nutrient they absorb.

I have seen the tank, that's proof enough for me.

the phosphates locked up in the mangrove are less likely to be leached back into the water column than those in the DSB.

of course the question really is, why have the phosphates in the system in the first place.
