Man, my LFS is killing me
Picked up a few things, minor things, at my favorite LFS today. Got 4 different bags and the SG ranged from 1.018 to 1.022 checking with my refracto. Man! Now I got to do some serious acclimation. The bag with the turbos was the worst at 1.018. How long would you acclimate this stuff for?
I called him to let him know. I know it's tough when you're constantly bagging and topping off but it makes it a royal PITA to acclimate and hard on the livestock.

If you can I would drip remove half the LFS water out the bag and drip him with my water for about 2.5 hours.

Yes, don't be in any hurry. The longer you acclimate, the better off they will be.

i am not sure which store it was but next time just have them ship the snails and any crabs with no water. they will be fine. otherwise just take it slow and easy. small jumps in salinity will not be a problem for most fish and corals. just use caution with inverts.

I received a bunch of snails a few weeks ago with no water at all. I just let them float for a few min then emptied them out into the water. I looks like they all made it

I was just reading about acclimation of snails, it said most often they are not given the time to acclimate appropriately. The acclimation process should be very slow, like over a 2 hour period! Not only that, but that most of the snails we buy are gonna die 'cause they are not tropical! The most useful long lived snail for a reef tank is the cerith.

Viv- have you been talking to them Left coasters again.
only the snails listed as Margaritta snails will not do well in out tropical tanks. Ceriths, Astreas, and Trochus will not have a problem in our tropical tanks.

snails will almost always be fine just taken out of the bag and attached above the water line, ive never acclimated a snail longer than 15min, and lately ive just been tossing them in with no losses. 2 hours is really excessive in my opinion, i dont even drip shrimp or starfish.

Acclimation is a subjective thing depending on who you talk to.
With many inverts.....if you do anything sudden with them, they may look fine for a few weeks or so.......but then drop dead.
I dont drip anything..but for inverts and fish after floating the bag, i do play the cup in/cup oput game in the bag for 30-45 minutes.
for all corals the only acclimation i do is float the bag then put em in.

I agree it depends who you are asking, also You have to think about , How long the fish or invert hads been in the bag, if You got it mail order , and it was delayed in shipment and the water is really bad or the bag leaked , It may be better to try and get the fish into the tank, staying in the bag may do more harm then good

I just tossed my snails in and they are all fine...even the margarita snails are living and I have had them a month no losses.

when we first started reefing we used to acclimate everything and would lose over half of our livestock . so we tried just placing them in the tank our snails do fine and our shrimp we have had for over 2 years. (we do not recommend this to everyone it is a risk, but it has worked for us..you have to do what works for you.)

I've managed to somehow kill almost every turbo snail I've ever purchased. I'm just trying to make sure that they aren't dying from improper acclimation. I'm guessing with all the brown algae I have they may have at least plenty to eat.
