Mama don't like my Bare Bottom
Well it's nearing time for the big tranformation. My wife dropped the bomb just now and says she hates the Bare Bottom. She wants sand. I want to argue but I know better. In truth I don't want nor have I the capability to keep SPS's. I am lookin at a LPS, softie, leather tank. I could get away with sand. Help me out folks. I have been thinkin BB so long I haven't even considered this. So far here is the setup.
29g - standard glass tank
daul satallite fixture w/ daul daylight and dual actinic all 65w
CS50 overflow (on back order) rated at 300gph
Pumps? I was lookin at the maximum my overflow could take but realisticaly I can get away with alot less with the critters I want to keep.
Closed loop? Is this still an option? Well yes, it is but what kind of flow?
Spray bar? Is this just ask for trouble with a substrate?
I hate the look of powerheads and I want to refrain from using them as much as possible. I will try to accomlish all my flow goals with the return and a closed loop with a SCWD in the mix some place. I am still gonna suspend my rock on an eggcrate shelf now I'll just have to make it higher to accomidate substrate. An algae scrubber of some type is in consideration as well. With the lower flow I might just use my "fuge" as a scrubber/settle out tank. Running 100% of my overflow through it first then into my baffled sump for skimming and chemical filtration.
All ideas are welcome and will recive cinsideration.

just do it, although with the stuff you have listed, you ought to get a 55 or 60 gal tank.
it's never too late to upgrade size..
55 gl will need 2 bags of southdown.

You can still use a CLS and a spray bar. The spraybar would have to be designed not to disturb the substrate. For what you said you want to keep, with the softies and leather, you might actualy have a healthier system for them with the sand bed. They like some nutrients in the water as opposed to SPS. You can totaly avoid the power heads in the tank with the CLS!

If you look at my pics in "tank specs" you can see that I designed the stand to hold a much bigger tank! I will prolly get a 125 in a few months but the stand will take a 250 wich i will have built. Oh yes I will!!!

Well, now due to space restrictions I have a choice between a big top off tank and no fuge or a small top off and a small fuge. I am thinkin a rubbermade tray thats 6-7" deep for the fuge. I can cram a wad of light over it and T off the overflow line to feed it. I'd put in a 2" fine sandbed kicked off with live sand activator. I think this would be a favorable environment for macro. Shallow, semi-swift and well lit. I'd just have to downsize my top off tank from a 10g to a smaller containor of some type and top it off mor often.
