Magnum 350

This is my first thread thing and I would just like to say TRT is incredible. But besides the point I just don't understand why everyone has beef with the Magnum 350. I mean I have two of them on my 75gallon never had nitrates or nitrites and I have had it up for a year now. Even when it was cycling I never saw the ammonia go up or nothing. But I also have a hefty amount of live rock in the system. I don't know but maybe I am just lucky. Has anyone else ever had such good experience with the Magnum 350 or is it just me and this whole thing is luck.

the reason they tend to cause people problems is for those people that dont ever clean it out... They work great for picking up floating debris and for a place for carbon (if using it)

oh and DUH.... WELCOME TO TRT!!!!

I was just wonder what poeple think. But if you have one I usually clean my out often with a garden hose (More Power). But I usually don't make post I do more of reading other peoples idea and what not. Any ways I don't want to start a WW3 between the wet/dry filter people vs the canister filter people over which one is better I guess I am just looking for opinoins and experiences of what people have had wih the Magnum 350.

(So as John Lennon says give peace a chance!!)

I can't really give you any imput, I have never used a canisters. But I think You will find some that like them and the ones that don't. But you don't have to worry about WW3 here , This is a helpful site and You will find good info.

Canister filters have their problems, but the Mag 350 specifficaly has one huge problem.

If you run sand take yours apart and inspect the area where the magnet part for the impeller sits!! The problem is sand gets into the filter (inevetable) and it sinks to the bottom (down where the impeller sits) and it slowly cuts through the plastic bottom of the filter, dumping half of your tank on the electric part.

Clean it regularly, and inspect and clean the impeler and housing and you should not have problems, but some have.

BTW, I don't use any mechanical filter on my reef, but I have a magnum 350 on my FW planted setup.

HTH,
Whiskey

Over the yrs I have used a variety of canister filters and the Magnum is definitley the worst of any of them. Its noisy, traps air, has only one compartment for media, and your always screwing around with the rubber O ring. Additionally the way the Magmum is designed if any carbon or sand gets sucked into the canister chances are your impeller is going to get damaged .. the Company will send you a new impeller if you complain but thats a PIA. If your looking for another Magnum PM me ... suspect my old one is laying around and I will sell cheap.

Not sure but I think Steven Pro wrote up a review of various canisters which included the Magnum ... he wasn't impressed with the Magnum either .. should find that review over at RC.

I don't think you need a canister filter in any reef tank. The only purpose would be to run chemical media. What do you use the magnum for? Most reefers don;t use wet/dry filters either. The live rock is more than sufficient as a bio filter. Many of us also don;t have any mechanical filtration because we donmt want the plakton the get filtered out. And as stated above, if you don;t clean your sponges, you will have water wuality problems.

Welcome to TRT!!!

everyone has hit all the big points.

if you clean it out regularly you should not have any problems with them. i just see them as something else to clean. a properly run skimmer will remove everything a canister filter will without the effort. with a skimmer you just need to empty the collection cup. i am a lazy person, and i know it, so i like to put things in my tank that will make my life easier. the more i have to clean them more i find i do not do it.

It is nice to hear everyone's replys on this forum. But one reason I have passion for the Magnum is that I have been through God knows how many hurricanes since I live I florida and when the power goes out a million time it always comes back strong. But I use them most for to get the floating crap out of the water and my main filter is the live rock. But I feel as if people are having problems with it I have seem almost al of them. Thanks for everyone's support of this post and who knows maybe i am just lucky with the magnum in a saltwater tank.
