macro ID please

does anybody know what this is? is it some kind of uber bubble algae? it was a lot darker red under 175w MH. it does not like the 400w mh. the main bunch which this is a part of has been slowly breaking off. i only have a couple of pieces left in the tank now, all of the pieces that have let go i put in the refugium where they seem to like it better. only lit by LOA PC.

thanks,

G~

Nope, not a 'bubble alga'.

Looks like a Gracilaria to me.
'Looks like'

If so, it is harmless fodder for herbivores, especially fish.
Keep in mind there are hundreds of species of Gracilaria, and they ain't my cuppa.

Looks identical to something I had. You might find something helpful in this thread: http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...&threadid=5752

DaveC-thanks that is the stuff. the colour of yours was the colour of mine until i moved it under the 400w mh. i now have several batches growing in the refugium. most of the ones inside the tank itself have let go.

Whatever it is, I wish I still had some. It was so beautiful that I thought it would look better in the display than in the refugium. It took a whole 60 seconds for a yellow tang to tear it apart.

my kole tank has no interest in it at all, along with any other algae i have. well actually he just eats the diatom. i really like it also, i am a little annoyed that it does not like the 400w lights. i have a couple of bunches that seem to be taking root in and amongst the LR. i think it actually starts out as an elongated bubble algae. very wierd stuff.
