MACO 2003 Summer: Scott Michaels, Sanjay Joshi, Brian Ferguson

Fellow Reefkeepers,

After a very successful Winter session, MACO (Marine Aquarist Courses Online) is now taking registrations for Summer Courses. Typically summer is slow for the hobby but not for MACO. Some of our best courses for the year are being presented during the summer session.

Scott W. Michael from May 18, 2003-August 2, 2003, will be teaching Care and Behavior of Reef Fishes. In this 11-week course you will explore the lives of coral reef fishes and how their natural history is related to their care in the home aquarium. Scott’s goal is not only to facilitate your becoming a more responsible and better aquarist, but also to help you gain a greater appreciation of the fishes that we keep in our living room “oceans.” He believes that the more we appreciate the ocean’s inhabitants, the more we will care for the world’s coral reefs and the organisms that live there. For those that also scuba dive, the information presented in this course will help you better understand the fishes you observe in the wild! (Note: the contents of the course may change slightly based on the expressed interest of course participants.) You can read more about this and other course by going to www.reefs.org/maco/index.php.

Brian Ferguson from May 18, 2003 - July 21, 2003, will be teaching Acrylic Fabrication: Protein Skimmer. The intent of this course is to provide you with the basic skills required to design and construct quality and professional acrylic products for aquarium use. Materials selection, preparation, fabrication, assembly and finishing will all be taught while producing a beckett-style protein skimmer. The skills learned in the process of this course will allow students to produce almost any other type of acrylic product they may wish to fabricate in the future. The end product will be constructed using professional techniques, resulting in a high-quality device, and useful skills for future projects. The student should feel comfortable and competent in designing and constructing quality acrylic items at the completion of the course. You can read more about this and other course by going to www.reefs.org/maco/index.php.

Sanjay Joshi from August 10, 2003-Sept 13, 2003, will be teaching Lighting the Reef Aquarium. Lighting is an important element of keeping the corals alive and healthy, and also one of the more expensive items in setting up a reef aquarium. In this 5-week course you will review the various options available to reef hobbyist for lighting, along with the basic understanding of light. You can read more about this and other course by going to www.reefs.org/maco/index.php

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Register for a course you must first register for the MACO website at www.reefs.org/maco/index.php. After you have registered for the website you can then register to take courses. If you are already registered for the MACO site you can go directly to the registration pages:

Follow the instructions to sign up for a course (or multiple courses). If you have any questions regarding our course offerings, please head over to our MACO Questions/Suggestions/Feedback forum located here: http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=20. Please post any questions, suggestions, comments, etc as we would love to hear from you!

We hope you attend this enriching, education resource. Ask around and we're confident others will attest that MACO is well worth the time and nominal tuition.

Note: Dates may change at anytime depending on many factors but the instructor and MACO will work hard to limit the changes. Days and times of online chats have not been set for the courses and will worked out at a later date between the students and the instructor.

Sorry to be a pest, but I wanna make sure this is seen It's not often hobbyists get a chance to interact live with these noted experts.

I personally would've killed 10 years ago to work with Scott Michaels :P I know how busy Scott is, so I don't know when (if) he'll teach another course to the hobbyist.

We've all come to expect great information about lighting from Sanjay Joshi. His recent two part articles in the past two www.advancedaquarist.com issues is a reaffirming testament to his knowledge and zeal to advance the hobby. Now here's a chance to learn from the man himself :P

Every who attended Brian's previous acrylic workshop said they recommend and will attend future workshops. On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being the most worthwhile, 5 being least), his acrylic course rated 1.3 Want to build yourself an affordable, but supremely well designed skimmer? What the learning experience of working with acrylic? You won't be disappointed with his workshop.

Bumping this up in hopes that people get a chance to see what MACO is about.
