Macaryn Two harmful to Reefs???

I have noticed some small red lines near the tail of my Foxface. I also see a couple of brown spots on his tail. I think this may be the start of an internal infection. I was going to dose with Macaryn Two. I don't have a hospital tank. Any suggestions. Also I thought about giving him a good dose of the Selcon in his food put don't know if that would help this.

I'm not familiar with that product and a search of several resources didn't bring it up for me. Is the spelling correct?

I'm leery of adding anything to my reef tank. Medications just aren't specific enough and often times kill things we hadn't intended or you aren't able to dose to a theraputic level in an open environment.

I'd start adding Selcon just as SOP and making sure he has a good diet which includes a lot of veggies. You might also try garlic, Horge has an excellent article about garlic in our archives:

Mac 2 will wreck your reef tank. I have used it in the past in a bare bottom 10 gallon tank $9 at Wall Mart.

Hi Candyman,
Reef tanks should not be treated with any type antibiotics or chemical medications, IMHO. Any of these will have deleterious effects on the beneficial bacteria and probably infauna in your tanks.
You can try treating with the natural remedies suggested by Alice and, in the meantime, set up a hospital tank if yu feel serious medication is needed. You can do this with a rubbermaid tub, airstones and heater, using water from your tank via water changes. This would be a temporary setup during treatment and would have to be monitored closely and with water changes to prevent a cycle.
You might also try a freshwater dip if parasitic infection is suspected. Be careful with those poisonous FoxFace spines whatever method you use!!

NO NO NO NO never add medication to a reef tank, dont believe the claims of reef safe. Proper diet and selcon supplementation, even garlic is worth a try but if you have to treat a fish or coral do it in a Q tank!!!!!!!!!!
