Loud gurgling noise from overflow return
Hi folks, I have just put the live sand and water in my new aquarium (75g hex). Thanks for all the advice on setup. Now that I have the water in it, I do have a problem. When the water goes into the center overflow and into the sump it is making a LOUD gurgling noise that can be heard for miles! I have 1" tubing from the overflow to the sump and the tubing is not full (1/2 air 1/2 water). What do I do??? Should I go with smaller tubing?? I cannot live with this noise! Thanks in advance you folks are great. Joel

you need a simple fix called a durso overflow...or durso standpipe. it's a pretty easy diy fix. Here's a link to the famous Mr. Durso's site: http://www.rl180reef.com/pages/standpipe/standpipe.htm
We have these in our overflows and they are perfectly quiet.

Geeez I heard that noise up here in Wisconsin and first thought it was my overflow.
My TidePool Silent overflow will make the same type of sound if I have the water volume going too fast. A very loud sound too. If I slow up the water coming into the tank (return line valve just after the pump) then the sound stops.

Don't mean to hitchike on your thread Joel, but when I increase the amount of water being circulated, should I increase the size of the breather hole? I am running a Mag 5 and a Mag 7 I think that there is about 5-6 feet of head for each pump. The overflow box is an Amiricle style with 1" diamater. Should I go with a second box? Combined with 2 Maxijet 900's it seems like a lot of current, but everyone in there seems to love it.

Hi Wrasse man. If you increase to two pumps you may indeed have a problem with your overflow not being able to catch up. I would suggest you have a flow regulator on each of your pumps. This should enable you to create the perfect balance, but I am a "newbie" so...

Just to add another wrench to the mix, I think this one works just as well, takes less room, and is easier to make:

I use the Stockman on mine. I think it works best for the people with hang-on overflow boxes. The Durso is pointed more at the Reef Ready tanks, but I don't see that the Stockman mod wouldn't work in a RR tank. Just my .02

Hi gang, Interesting timing.... I'm at the point of piling up coils of 1" tubing, barbs, gate valves and all the other goodies to connect my remote sump/refugium to the main tank and am now about to pick up the overflow. I was going to get a CPR but after research found to many people having problems. Next in line...the Lifereef overflow but the main complaint was it gurgles...pretty loud! I've heard reports that installing a gate valve below the overflow to regulate the velocity of the water flow can substantialy reduce the gurgle. Any other reports to substantiate that one? I'm already familiar with the Stockman version of the Durso standpipe and was planing on building one of those if I got a Lifereef. How about some reports from others that have tried, any variations on design etc? JJ (not missing...just lurking)

JJ-
I've had the CPR overflow running on my tank for a few months now, and I've had zero problems. I had the gurgle problem, but I was expecting it, and within a day after adding it to my system I put a Stockman Standpipe in it. A few tweeks to the setup (air hole) and it is almost silent. I've heard other people have a problem with the CPR causing overflows and such, but setup the way CPR recomends I don't think there is a problem--at least I haven't had any.
