Lost my Hippo...

I had an unfortunate accident happen in my tank yesterday. One of my Hippo tangs got stuck against the guard of my bulkhead/overflow. My wife found it there when I was at work yesterday. She grabbed it and put it in the sump, but it didn't recover.

I have had the pair for about 9 months, bought as juveniles and are both about 1.5" - 2". These were my favorites, pal-ing around with my GSM clown all day. Can I replace my Hippo with one of the same size? I know as a general rule, you should add them together, but will I run into any issues - or is it just a maybe-maybe not thing? Thanks for the help!

I'm sorry to hear that Dave

At that size, they are probably still small enough to be into the "safety in numbers" routine and get along fine. No guarantees of course, and for what may happen later when they get a little larger...I'm just not sure. I have the same thing going on in my tank with two small bristletooth tangs, about the same size now as yours. They get along great so far. They were both really little when I brought them home; I thought if they could hang out together they might be more comfortable and not stress out. Never a spot of ich so far on either one (knock wood!)

I'll take one or both back when they get larger or if they start sparring with each other but they are doing well for now.

Dave,
I am so sorry to hear that! Very heartbreaking.

I would venture to say that at that size you could add another.
