Question

Looks whos back?

Long time no see reef tank world. Been busy but Fishturd is back. Ok, here's my problem. I tested my Cal and Alk with salifert test kits like I always do. I have always kept my Cal around 420 to 440 range and my Alk to 9 to 11 DKH. If you remember looking at my tank in the Dec Tank of the Month you'll see that I have a monster load of Xenia's. I've been taking those Xenia's and trading them out right for Corals. I've added alot in the past months or maybe even the last 2 weeks. Well, I tested my Cal and Alk last night and my Cal was 380ppm and Alk was 8 dkh. What do you think is happening? Maybe allthose coral are sucking it all up, lol.

The only thing that I add to my tank and have great success thanks to tdwyatt for is Kalk. I used tdwatt's help when he told me I should use 1 tablespoon per gal of water when I mix my Kalk. Everything has been great. Now I'm low. Should I up the Dose or try another means of calcuim to get it going agian while I'm Dosing Kalk.

Here's my corals load, not in any order: in my 55 gal tank
1 Devil Hand
1 BIG Cabbage Leather
1 Candy Cane
2 Clams
2 Open Brains
2 Gonaporas (going on a year with both of them)
1 Slipper Coral
1 Colt Coral
1 Galaxea (away from everybody of course)
1 Pogoda Cup Coral
2 Zoo's
1 Rock Anemone
1 BIG Toad Stool
1 BIG Plate Coral
1 Nice side Acrapora
1 Set of Ricordia's
and Xeina's from HELL

i would bring the level back up with some calcium chloride then once you get to where you want , up the dosage on the calcium hydroxide . i use about two tbl spoons per gall . I HATE XENIA ! i have the same problem you have , can't get rid of it fast enough !

Welcome back Fishturd!

Yep, adjusting your Ca separately will help get it where you want it.

Thanks, Just really busy to come on with my Daughter. She's 19 weeks old now. Never hard to take care of the reef tank though.

probally the easiest to get would be kents turbo calcium or i believe seachem also uses it in their reef complete . it will tell you on the label whether its ca chloride or hydroxide .

Most of the common "liquid" calcium supplements are CaCl2.
