Looking for a new protien skimmer
Just in case I can get my hands out of the tank and go to the fish store, does anyone have advice on what I should be looking for in a skimmer? Everyone has said the Prism Skimmer I have is useless. Keep in mind I my tank is only 44 gallons. Thanks!

The SeaClone is also useless. The AquaC brand of skimmers have great reports from people, so do the Coralife Super skimmers, though I am not a big fan of their construction.
Do you have a sump? If so I would definitally get one of the ASM G series (personally I would go G3, I don't think you can over skim). These skimmers give you allot of performance for their price.

I don't have a sump. I do get a cupfull of gross water sludge out of the skimmer. What should I be getting out of it.

How long does it take to get that cup full of gross sludge? How much sludge are we talking here?

I have a prizm on the frag tank and it works just fine. I'm pulling about a cup full out once a week in a 15 gal tank. How long does it take to get a cupful out of yours?

I get about 1 cup every two days. Before my red slime algae problem the sludge was thicker and really smelly. Now it seems more like murky water, as I have it flowing a little faster.

I'm gonna throw in a vote for the Remora pro hang on. I have had 2 of them and no complaints. Both of mine had the maxi-jet 1200, but I hear the upgrade to the mag 5 is the way to go. HTH

Turning it up is a good thing to do. I still bet you can get allot more out of that tank with a better skimmer. I don't know of any truly great skimmers that are HOB because I don't have one, but based on reports I have heard the best are the Coralife super skimmer, and the Remora.
Personally I would get the coralife.
