Livestock limits in a reef tank.
I might be getting a little ahead of myself, I'm only on page 56 of The Conscientious Marine Aquarist. Lets say that I have a 75 gallon tank with 75 pounds of live rock, and 4 inches of sand bed. What the max number of soft corals I can put in that set up? I would also like 4-5 fish(less if needed). I plan on only keeping very easy maintain softies, due to the fact that I'm going to have only VHO lighting(4 bulbs, 1 blue, 3 full spec.). And that this is going to be my first attempt at a reef tank. My main theme for this tank is: Keep it simple stupid. I really want to keep soft coral, for 2 reasons. Gaining the much needed experience, and I also wanted a reef tank. I have about 3 years experience with fish only systems, but when it comes to reef tanks my knowledge is small.

It sounds like you are on the right track. I don't know what the answer would be for too much corals in a tank, I would say that you want to add them slowly and the biggest constraint would be size of the tank, if you have a healthy tank and everything is growing well, you will soon run out of room for corals. Another idea with K.I.S.S. is keep it slow stupid . Sounds like you are on the right track.

Your only limited to number of corals by the size of your tank as mentioned and the thickness of your wallet!!!!! JMO Johnny

Thanjs people... That book is really awesome, and easy to read. I plan on reading it cover to cover at least once before I start my tank.

Kranny,
I really cant stress enough how important patience is in this hobby. For instance, I have a 100gal reef tank. Over the last three years, I have bought/traded a ton of individual corals to fill in every nook and cranny in my tank. Now....I'm having to get rid of some!!! If I had purchased about half of the corals and just let them grow...I would have had an awsome tank!!!!
I think my point is to purchase corals, softys especially, place them in appropiate spots and JUST LET THEM GROW IN!!! Your tank will be beautiful before ya know it!

Another advantage to soft corals is they can be divided and trades for different ones, collect them all
