Lighting spectrum question
Ok, so this maybe should be in nano tanks question but this question pertains to all types of tank so I put it here.
In my 5.5 gallon nano i have 2x12 watt PC lights. The spectrum of these bulbs are both 6500K. Last time I tried my hand at coral, the Zoo's didnt last that long, and the GSP never fully opened up. Is this because of the spectrum of my light or was I just not keeping the parameters good enough?
Also, the type of endcaps i have for these lights are the four pin strait ones, and i have been unable to find these bulbs anywhere, mainly because i would like a 50/50 for this tank. Anyone know where I can find some?

Those bulbs will be very yellow, but the coral will grow just fine under them.
I would say the problem was perams or total lighting ammount, not specturm. 2*12W is not enough light to keep any coral, no matter the tank size,... except maybe mushrooms IMHO. You still need to get past a certin threshold of light for your corals to be able to use it.

thanks for the quick reply
while it doesnt change what you said i meant to put 2x13 watt, but that still isnt alot, i must just upgrade to a 10 gallon, that will give me more choises of what to put over it, maybe even a 70 watt MH

I would go with a 150W MH, the 70W put out almost nothing IMHO, this would also work on your current 5.5G tank. With the 10G, you could also go with a 96W Power quad PC though,...
10G tanks are cheap too, I think it would be a good move,...

Yeah, I am really starting to consider it, espcialy since I wouldnt really have to get any more rock because I have like 9 lbs already. The only thing stopping me from doing it in the next couple days is I need sand and some ro/di water from the lfs as I only have enough for this weeks water change.
Hopefully soon though, thanks for all your help.

Mark,
If you EVER need RO/DI water...you're more than welcomed to swing by.
I mean, I'm sure it's a PIA to carry it up the street and what not...but it's a heck of a lot cheaper! hahahaha
