lighting requirements help!
Ok. I was not getting any response on 'Tank Req.' forum.
I need to know if my lighting is adequate. I have a 112g show(deep) tank and 30g sump. I have 48" Sunpod 150Watt x 2, 14,000K M/H w/ lunar lights.

I am no expert but I would say you need alot more llighting, what are your tank's measurments how deep in inches and what do you intend to keep in this tank?

What are the dimensions of your tank, depth specifically, and what do you plan on keeping in there? For softies, I'd say you have the bare minimum, especially if your tank is as deep as I think it is. For really deep tanks, you probably would be better off with 250 or 400 watt halides (but it depends on what you plan to keep). The height of your rockwork also makes a difference - the further you go down the water surface, the more light is absorbed or deflected by the water itself, so you could place more light demanding corals high on the rocks under the halide bulb. HTH.

if you want to be ready for EVERYTHING, including light demanding acropora, i would go with 400w halides (you could probably get away with 250's though). with the 400's you could place the more light demanding corals anywhere in the tank and they would be fine, with the 250's placement would depend on the specific corals.
with the 150's you have now ... i would stick to softies and some LPS's (up high on the rocks). HTH

Hmm...well, if you want sps and clams, then definitely you will need stronger lights. If it's time to change bulbs (or if you haven't bought bulbs yet) then I would recommend the XM 10K bulbs for the strong Par output. I don't think you need to make the switch right away, but keep it on your to do list. For a 30 in deep tank, I would go with 400 watt halides.

you will have to change out bulbs AND ballasts. a 150w ballast will not fire a 250 or 400 watt bulbs.

I agree that you will want 400's for a 30" deep tank. You will need to change out everything
