lighting a 125

Well after being out of the hobby for 3 years, i'm setting up a 125 in the house we're buying.

I have most of my equipment picked out except for lighting.
I have narrowed it down to 3 choices
1) have 2 36" t5 fixtures
2) make a 4/6 60" t5 retro
3) do 3 175/250 MH pendants with t5 actinics

My lighting budget is only $500.
I aquired some equipment from someone leaving the hobby which included a 36" 4 bulb t5 fixture.

I used to have 2 250 watt MH on my 120 and they caused heat problems, i dont want to purchase a chiller, but if they are the best option for this sized tank i will.

I did a 6 bulb T5 retro on my 125 and staggered the bulbs to cover the ends a bit better...very happy with it...I did Advance ballast (standard HO, not overdriving), Tek reflectors and ATI bulbs...I get as much PAR as 250W MH's with 14K bulbs...and I keep a Maxima clam on at the bottom of the tank with excellent growth...in Feb of this year it cost me about $470, so right in line with your budget...no heat issues at all, but my sump is in the basement which helps with cooling a bit...but otherwise my lights are enclosed in a pretty short canopy with no fans...and I use about half as much at electricity over the 3 x 240W MH before you even factor in a chiller...the only thing I miss is the shimmer.

One other note on the 2 x 36" fixtures...you'll eat up any savings in bulbs...it seems all the "better" brand T5's are about the same in cost regardless of size...so your looking at 12 bulbs to replace instead of 6 or double the cost.

...and one other final thought...depending on what you want to keep you might be able to get away with a 6 x 4" setup with staggered bulbs too.

Here is my tank with my current bulb setup...getting ready to change it up in a few weeks:

jnicho, i've seen a few people not having good shimmer from t5's, do you have a lot of surface aggitation or is it pretty minimal?

I had none over my 55 w/ 5x54w t5ho's. as soon as i pointed my mag5 return pump towards the top i got a lot better shimmering.

I have some shimmer with the T5's, just nothing like you get with MH...it's not really an issue for me and I love everything else about them.

Good luck on the build. Need to know more about your stocking plans, and dimensions of the tank. As for the budget, be patient and save up (if you need) for the lighting that will best suit the long term needs of livestock you plan to house. It will cost less to only buy once as opposed to upgrading later on. You'll find both MH & T5 advocates here, but it all starts w/stocking plans.

Yep, a 125g is 72x18x21.
I plan on doing a mixed reef, with zoa/paly being dominate. I do want some sps and one clam though.

You could do a stepped lighting format like I have on mine... 150w MH on each end and a 250 in the middle. It would be perfect for LPS and such (even SPS as my tank is all SPS)

I use Lumenmax 3 pendants for the 2-150's and they are as bright as my 250 icecap reflector. If I have the head room I would install a Lumenmax Elite reflector in the center.

How much head room are you working with above the tank.. canopy or no canopy?

I will be buildilding a canopy for whichever lighting i choose. Unless I go with a single fixture, then it will be hung from the ceiling.
