Does anyone know if a shop light can be used for a tank light? I have a metal halide one that can take up to 500w and can be used in wet conditions.. IE it is somewhat sealed for rain and such...(should prevent salt creep). Was thinking of suspending it over a 5gallon tank and making a nano.. what are your thoughts. Also do you know if they make smaller watt bulbs for these, as 500w would make a lovely soup out of the creatures in a 5 gallon

I would think you would have a hard time using this fixture with a smaller bulb. The balast would overdrive it every time. and you are correct the 5 GAL nano would become a 2 gal soup in about 24 hours.
