LFS giving me free rock w/ polyps
Well the LFS has a rock and it looks like it has button polyps on it that won't come out or he said maybe one or two were trying to come out, he just opened his store in a new location and just has NO bulbs over them and these are deep tanks so I'm thinking they aren't getting enough light..
He said he would give it to me for free, and then if the polyps came out we would work something out later. This seems like a good deal, if they are polpys and they aren't disintegrated then they should be ok right??
Is there something that thinks I should stay away from this or go ahead and try it out...

Even if the polyps are dead, you will get a free piece of live rock. I would take it and see what happens. Keep it low in the tank and slowly move them up so you don't shock them with too much light.

Ditto, I'd give it a shot, and some time to see what comes from the rock, you'd be surprised what will show up in time,,

I decided not to get the rock, it was black looking and all and I didn't feel comfortable putting it in the tank, plus it looked terrible..

This rock is a ammonia spike waiting to happen, plus its a big eyesore, seriously... he said there were polyps on it, when i looked it, it was just cream colored postules and I wasn't sure what they were and I just wasn't taking a chance putting it in my established tank...

heck...I have a 150 cycling right now..trust me...10 minutes of a fresh water sponge bath and it would be ready to add to the already cycling rock I have....Heck..my 55..I put dead black dry base rock in the during the cycle...then continued to dose with Corral Vital and Kent CB (A and B). Today (less then 6 months later) I have awesome coraline growing on that old black base-rock.
I will seriously pay shipping!

I think you were wise, Clownfish, you saw it, these others didn't. When it's free, it's usually worth what you pay for it, or less. Frankly, I'd not put a piece of live rock of any color in my established tank, unless it was small and had a large coral on it.

Well thanks for that complement, I have a couple of rocks I added last week, one with some green button polyps and another with some hairy mushrooms... but this rock was a distaster waiting to happen, I couldn't even stop the guy from giving it to me..

Yeah I don't like buying from him unless i feel totally comfortable, he just isn't that skilled. Plus he doesn't really know what he talks about, I bought some hairy mushrooms from him the other day which was a frag from someone else's tank.. I am sure if it remained it his tank it would have eventually withered away... I usually go to the LFS in Hattiesburg as the owner is much more professional... and this guy keeps a high school girl running the register when he's not there and she doesn't know much except the names of the fish and maybe some corals.... I always stick with my gut feeling
these hairy mushrooms expand about 4 inches across, my clowns have not played in the yet, but i hope they will soon..
