Lets Make a Mini Quiz for Startup Tanks.

some simple questions that one should be able to ask themselves and answer before they "start" their tank.

Upon doing all of the reading, I'm just trying to consolidate allot of information that is needed into one quiz, that you can read through, and if you don't know the answer, you should learn before starting your tank.

(Edit) I'm thinking more along the lines of What you need to know to sustain your tank more then stock it. It is to broad a subject to have this quiz have most people know what fish/corals are compatible with what imo.
(/Edit)

Assume they have the resources, and willingness to spend the time on the tank. Lets keep it basic enough to where you can do this in 5 mins in your head, but yet cover all of the basics.

Please feel free to revise these initial questions as well..
Lets see if we can get 10 - 15 Questions that are just vital to know before starting your tank.

1) Explain the Nitrogen cycle in Salt Water Aquariums.

2) List the three types of Filtration, and what equipment is used for each type.

3) What are the most widely used forms of lighting, and know each type's Pros and Cons.

4) Why is circulation in Salt Water Reef Tanks so important, and how much do you need per Gallon of water?

5) What is the recommended specific Gravity of Salt Water. How do you Test this?

6) What is the principal function of a protein skimmer?

7) What is a sump/refugium, and how is it beneficial?

8) Why is RO, DI, and RO/DI water used in Salt Water Tanks?

9) List a few Biotopes and a few specific inhabitants of that biotope.

10) What is a deep sand bed and what are it's benefits?

Lets Rack up a list worthy of any Upcoming reefer

(edit) Just a note. the questions I'm listing are the ones I feel are the most important for someone just starting into the hobby, from personal experince and understanding of what I've read so far. We could EASILY branch this out into many subquizzes, but understanding the answers to the questions above will start someone in the right direction.

What books are out there for the beginner?
(Reading is very important before you consider a reef tank)

What size tank are you going to have?
(We always recommend the largest one you can afford---saves in upgrading later which 9 out of 10 hobbyists will do. Make sure it is the right footprint for aquascaping! Many make a big mistake in getting a 55 gallon when a 75 gallon or larger will make all the difference in the world).

How bout:

What is a sump/refugium?

What is the principal function of a protein skimmer?

Neither one is a _MUST_ for a new tank, but it's nice to know what you are getting into and if this hypothetical person (I'll name this person Charley) has done the reading, Charley should know.

What fish are compatible with what fish.

What corals are a good starter coral.

Interesting project, polish it up, and we can save it someplace easy to get to

Keep some q's comming.... we'll see if something can work for a good chunk of common questions everyone asks..

maybe after the q's are written up, we can all post links to the answers and such from other good resources..

Lighting seems to be a big issue with alot of folks. I suggest we make a non opioninated spot where one can make his/her own choice about lighting.

Well I tried to be very un-opinionated with lighting in question #3. I'm trying to be neutral with the whole quiz, but yet ask questions so you are aware of all the various types/ways to do it.

like with RO DI and RO/DI setups.. everyone has a diffrent prefrence. but knowing why people choose these is important to know.

wondering if the DSB should be more general, or maybe add a seperate question about other basic substrate materials.

How about,
"Do you know what you want?"
Ive seen alot of people in the past who diddnt understand the interaction of the various critters they wished to keep.
"How much reasearch have you done?"
Kinda goes with the one above, but I learned the hard way... READ READ READ, then buy.

What is the one fish you can't live without?

Many people fall in love with one fish but then don't understand that that fish, say its a queen angel, isn't recomended for a reef or can't be kept with other alike angels. I used to see a lot of that when I worked in a lfs a few years back.

If there is one fish that you have to have then you should build your tank around that one fish or group of fish. IMO

yikes!!!

Okay, I'm throwing in the towel.... a quiz... oh no... okay here's mine:

1. What are the benefits of the different lights MH, VHO, NO?

2. What is the difference between pressure rated and circulation pumps?

3. What is the difference between magnetic pumps and direct drive pumps?

4. How much circulation do you need per gallon of water?

5. How much light do you need to keep SPS, LPS, FO?

6. What are the differences in the ballast types? Pulse Start, HQI, regular MH ballast, e-ballast?

7. How much electricity do I need so I don't overload my outlet?
