I spoke with one of the testers during the Beta phase. the fans are there because you do get some heat off the back of the board but in the end it is nothing compared to MH lights. PFO actually set one on a nano in the office without a heater and the temp in the water stayed at room temp the whole time so the important thing is the light does not heat your water. they also got some good par values out of it with some good growth from what i have heard. I agree the initial cost is high... but in the end it is less than MH over that period. if you don't have the money to try it thats fine... just don't knock it till you have a reason to.

im def not knocking it, im exited, ive heard about this before, the price is high, but it will come down, more companies will jump on it if it is a good product.

I'm not knocking anything but the price. They do have to recoup the test and design of the thing, but $3344 for a 72 inch fixture is way too high! Like everything else, I'm sure it will come down. I just think they probably will hurt their initial sales because of the price.
LED technology is old in anything but the Reef Community. I'm sure it will work out for them and all of us in the long run. I just bought a $1400 fixture myself recently and would have certainly considered this one if it wasn't so pricey.

I am going to wait a few years to see how good they really are, right now the only thing going for it is that its from PFO.

rip off city
it just looks like one big headache to opperate
3,000 bux for a light??? if i were married to donald trump id say ok why not try it. ahh these gimmicks, what will they think of next
so the real reason to buy this is so we dont have to change a light bulb for the next 13 years???
i bet the warranty on that baby is only a year and it breaks down after that then all ya have is a 3,000 dollar lesson
it looks like a bunch of inverted tea lights

actually there has been alot of research devoted to using LED technology for reef aquariums. I think most of us here have been following along and to finally see the first working prototype is great.I am sure there are alot of bugs to work out but if we didnt improve on our technology where would we be?

Yah they are. Give it a few years and we will see the testimonials and a price drop. Unless PFO wants to send me one to try out on my sps reef I won't be getting one anytime soon

i agree, ive been hearing rumors hear and there, and its great to see one finally, their potential is way better than any other light out there, if these work and drop in price, chances are youll never see another MH, PC, VHO, topic on the forum. this would be the most cost effective, controlable, and strongest light you can get. once they get them rolling.

A few meetings ago, probably 5 months back we had a guest speaker at our club meeting. He worked for another company that is working on a LED light. His light looked like a toy compared to this one

does anyone know if it gives that actinic light look option? the corals look their best under actinics with their glowing pyschodelic colors.
i wonder if this light does this
the picture of that tank with those led lights kinda looks bland. at least get a background for pete's sake

Possibilities are endless with LEDs. They are made in most wavelengths now. I agree that when they get reasonably priced, the others could become obsolete.

it wont let me copy and paste but that link shows all the settings the light has, from dawn to early morning to full sun afternoon to cloud cover to sun setting to dusk to moon shimmer etc. I think it might even do sun movement from rising on one side of the tank to setting on the other side
