Question

Leather Question

I have a yellow leather coral and I was wondering how do they reproduce? Would I have to frag a piece off from it or what? I will have to get a picture of it to show all of you. It is small right now but I am interested if it grows.

Thanks for any help,
Brian

Occasionally they will drop babies, although my yellow has never done that. (My Devil's Hand does all the time.) The most reliable way is to frag it yourself, but I would wait until it's a decent size. I've had trouble getting this particular species to cooperate with my frag attempts (I'm 50/50), but others have had no problems.

If it's a new addition, I'd give it several months to settle in. The yellow Sarcophyton elegans is the most difficult softie to keep, IMHO, requiring somewhat higher light a flow. Still, once you've had it awhile, they seem to hardy up somewhat. (At least IME)

Good luck,
Danielle

i had a frag of this and it is a hard one to get to attach. you CANNOT use netting, and most rubberbands will chop it in 2 try to use a gut seuture (sp?).

I have had good luck with these.

They are also slow growers, so be warned!

Thank you for all of your responses. I will wait awhile to let it grow more. Also, what do I use to frag one? Do I just use a knife and cut a piece off?

Leathers are pretty easy to frag, but they are slow growers in my experience. Sometimes they will bud off, but not always. I just use a straight edge razor blade to cut mine and haven't had any problems with it.
