large hermit crabs

i did some reading on strawberry hermit crabs. most of the information i have found says they are land hermits that like saltwater ponds. what would be a good large hermit crab?

i am thinking about building a hermit crab aquarium. thats all thats going in. sand, live rock, and several large hermits. i notice that some of the local shops have some that are $10 that look about 2 inches or larger. anyone know what they are? how big they get. ??

there is a large electric blue type, i think they are commonly called electric blue hermits, and there is another that some people call holloween hermits, that are black and orange striped, those are the only two i can think of that get kinda large (golf ball) and are actually marine hermits. im sure there are more though.

i am thinking about driftwood for them to climb on. i searched the forum but didn't find anything about them in saltwater. driftwood okay for sw tanks?

i know i am going to have to glue the rocks together since the hermits would knock them all over the place. i was thinking about using silicone to "glue" the driftwood to the bottom of the tank. use some kind of acrylic or fiberglass rods and glue to keep the rocks together. put the rocks along the base of the driftwood. that way the piece of driftwood would be the "centerpiece" of the tank so to speak. this would give the hermits lots of vertical space to climb but not take up so much space with rock. this would also leave lots of space open on the bottom of the tank to.

any thoughts??

halloween hermits, black & white haw hermits, and marshall island electric blue hermits are a few i am looking at getting.

i am also thinking about ordering assorted hermits from swf.com and seeing what i get in that.

this is just going to be a hermit tank. if i actually put a fish in it i might toss in a damsel or something. no reef.

well scarlet hermits have to be the most well mannerd large hermits around, but in a tank full of large hermit's there will be casualties.

an "assorted hermit" package from any store is most likely going to be a mix of dwarf species. blue legs, reds, zebras etc. i would stick with species that you know are large, and get extra shells, they can be mean little suckers.

i had a rather large blue leg that tried to eat one of my bubble tips. the bubble tip ate him and died.. grrrr.. lol that hermit was over an inch. i have a green leg that is pretty big now. would say atleat an inch and a half if not a little bigger. hes a monster. i know hes killed 2 hermits and a half dozen snails. he will be my first resident when i get the stuff for the hermit tank.

its kinda funny that i started to do saltwater for the hermits and a year later i am just now planning a hermit tank.. lol.. oh well.. hopefully in a few months i will have it all done and pics to post.
