Lace rock

I really like the look of lace rock and I can get it pretty cheap at a stone dealer. I am growing (very successfully) my own live rock, but so far I only have small tufa stones that I have bought at the local aquarium dealer. I really need to get a couple of base rocks going. I have seen mixed reviews on the safety of lace. Any thoughts?

If you're talking about florida lace rock, I used it in my old FOwLR along with L.R. I scrubbed all the lichens etc off and it worked fine -it's great for building ledges and caves because it can be really gnarly. The only problem I see with it is that it's quite dense so I don't think it works especially well for filtration.

Could be usefull as base rock though, mine was covered with coraline, dusters etc. in a few months.

Terp, I assume your talking about the rock that is volcanic in nature and picked from the top of mountains where the weather has pitted the rock, thereby giving it a great look for our tanks as well as light weight. I use to think that because this rock was volcanic it might not be good for our tanks but I had some people from Mote Marine Labratories purchase some for their own tanks from me. Mote Marine is located in Sarasota, Florida and do all sorts of marine environmental related tasks. If your ever anywhere near Sarasota, they are a great place to visit.

I used lava rock in my 29 gallon saltwater tank over 30 years ago and it worked just fine! I'm sure it's the same stuff!

Welcome to the TRT!!!! both Terp 1 and you also Tarpon 65.

Terp1- what colour is the lace rock? i used to use what was called lace rock in my FO, when i first got started in SW. it seemed pretty safe. the stuff i used was almost white, very pale. it seemed pretty safe to me.

Tarpon65-is this the same stuff you are talking about?
