Yep, totally safe. My urchin has actually chewed through it on a couple PVC LR pylons that I've painted. I've also used paint on rustoleum with mixed 50/50 with acetone (so it bonds with plastic) on PVC before (which the urchin has chewed on and eaten also).

Most paint is perfectly fine once cured. I would stay away from metalflakes.

I wonder how it would look if you mixed up a few colors. Maybe black/brown, grey, pink, and purple. Instead of spraying on solid coats of each color, just start with a base coat of one darker color and then speckle on the other colors. Might break up the outline enough to make it blend in. Although, I'm still wondering about gluing crushed base rock around the edges of the eggcrate.

It would look like reef-neck cammo

Perhaps a full gillie suit for reef snipin

INHM that is a lot of work for something that is going to be covered in algea in a few months.

fchidsey, you're absolutely right! But sometimes I just like to over-think things. It's part of my self-diagnosed (actually wife-diagnosed) OCD. My wife thinks I'm crazy with all my hobbies. She thinks I have too many hobbies, and I keep bouncing from one to the next so frequently I'm like a house cat hopped up on meth and tossed into a room full of catnip-filled toy mice! She likes to call it my Hobby Tourettes.

But still, wouldn't that look cool?!?!

You have to much time on your hands!I'm telling you, paint it just with the purple PVC primer.and it's a great match of coraline algea!

You could also cover it with the spray insulating foam that you normally use in your house to insulate tight spaces.
