Question

Killer Cleaner Fish?

I came home tonight and found 2 of my Astrea snails on their sides. My Skunk (?) Cleaner Shrimp was cleaning one of them. The one he was cleaning was dead and the other seemed stunned. I have had all of these for about 10 days now and the shrimp has already molted and has almost seemed to have doubled. Could this shrimp be killing the snails? And if so what am I supposed to do?

I don't think the shrimp is the killer. They will help clean up when something dies though. How did you acclimate the snails?

Over several hours. Floated the bag, added water then put them in the tank. They were very active all over the rock and the sides of the tank. Wouldn't have thought anything was wrong.

Sometimes it takes a week or two for snails to die of acclimation shock. It might not even have been you...they could have been acclimated poorly at the LFS.

That said, what are tank readings for SG, pH and nitrates?

1.024, Ph 8.2, Nitrate >.5. am doing a w/c today. Have lost the other snails from that batch. Got the snrimp with that group of snails and he seems to be thriving.
Hope it was the LFS, was sent there and really wasn't impressed. Have other snails and a couple of micro hermits they seem to be fine.
Am very anal about water parameters since a mishap that lead to the loss of an elegance coral years ago. I only have a 12 gal.

Sorry for your snail losses. Are you going to try again from another source?

Oh yes. One of my old stores that I thought closed actually relocated. Was in there the other day, I forgot how beautiful a tank can be. Would love a bigger tank but , don't think living in my car or a box is really an option
