Keeping Substrate Clean

Hi all,

I have been looking around and I have noticed most of you have extremely clean and often pristine sand beds. My sand bed is constantly dirty and is covered in diatoms and detritus. What are your secrets for keeping the sand clean? How do you do it and how can I keep my sand bed clean?

p.s I have no animals that aid in the cleaning of the sand bed.
