Keeping SPS with LPS ?
is there any problems with keeping SPS with LPS corals..im removing what little soft corals i had in my 30g besides xenia & zoanthus..but im wanting to leave my hammer, favia, & other LPS in there because im getting such great growth on them. im going to be getting some staghorns..bali slimers, elkhorns, digitata's & a few other aqucultered SPS..im only getting aqucultered as they ARE the healthiest..im really impressed by this 1st ORA frag. so now since i have 2 great sources to get ORA im going to stock some SPS corals. but only if my stylophora lives for about 3 months & has proven growth.

Neah,.. I keep LPS in my SPS tank,.. the only real problem I've found from it is LPS stinger tenticals,.. they have quite a reach to them and always win

The flow can be an issue as well. There are ways around it though.

I have never had a problem with anything besides stinging. Acans have been the absolute worst killing everything it gets close to.

i think i have my flow worked out pretty well..the porites has been happy & has shedded many times over the past 4-5 months & is finally starting to get good growth now, the stylo has full polyp expansion, more than any stylo i have ever seen with my own 2 eyes..& it seems to be too strong for xenia & mushrooms cause they usually fade away where i keep my SPS in the tank. i know acropora has a dominace chemical, i hope this works to establish SPS dominace in this system..cause some toadstools have attached there selfs to the main rock & may have to be cut away soon..i know how fast those corals can grow

You shouldn't have any problems with the lps. If you keep xenia, you should run carbon in the tank.

That's way too much carbon for a tank that size. You can cut it way back. Maybe use something like a cup of carbon, and rinse it in ro/di to get all of the dust out before adding it to the tank. To get rid of the dust on the rocks, stick a filter sock onto your overflow outlet to the sump and get a powerhead to blow the stuff off the rocks. The carbon bits will eventually get filtered out by the sock.

are you running your carbon in a reactor? if so, dont overfluidize it, carbon is friable and will break down releasing excess dust into your tank.

no its a whisper 10 hang on filter..i put carbon in a carbon sock & stuff it down in there till no more carbon will fit..then i sometimes add 2 large blocks of carbon filter pads..i usually wash the dust off really well but i know theres some still there..& i have watched this black dust growing..& didnt know if its some type of desiese, baceria, or carbon dust..dosent seem to blow or scrape off & i put a peice that was covered outside for 2 weeks & it was still a little black..but one rock in my tank got rid of its black dust covering.

I don't think that's carbon dust. I've seen it on some of my rocks too. Doesn't seem to be a problem as far as I can tell.

Why is that? I have a ton of xenia in my tank but don't notice any huge problems and I never have run carbon. I'm not saying I should or shouldn't but what should I expect if I don't run carbon? I just bought some the other day to try running in my phos reactor. How much should I use in a 120gallon (140 total) display?
