KC: Where is our public aquarium???? READ THIS, IDEAS NEEDED

Ok i dont know if anyone has started this thread before, so here it goes.

Kansas City needs a public aquarium. I think we could might (Optimistically thinking) be able to bump this up on the priority list. From doing some research I found out that one has been on the drawing board since the late 70’s. From there it has been halted and the last update I could find is from 2001. I for one do not trust a foundation that hasn’t updated their site in 3 - 4 years, so I am not encouraging you to send money to them.

There has to be a way for all of us on this board, well over 400, to get this rolling. I know that each of us knows at least 8 people; most of us know lots more, which would support a public aquarium. If we can get just that many it would be over 3000 people in support of this cause. With that LET THE IDEAS ROLL, I JUST COULDNT RESIST BRINGING THIS UP FOR DISCUSSION.

Here is a link to the Friends of the Aquarium. (not updated since 2001)

Here is a link to a free petition site( I would write one, but I am a horrible writer)

POST ANY OTHER IDEAS PLEASE!!!!!!

Mod,
if this gets big please sticky!

I agree that having an aquarium is nice for a community, but given the expense of building and ongoing upkeep, where would the funding come from. Often times it seems that they are tied into the University system, such as our Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. The tie in to educational institution and what not helps justify some of the heavy costs. Perhaps the project was put on the back burner do to less than optimistic economy or any number of other reasons.
You might look into those issues as well, being inland means you would have to have a facility to proccess and maintain a LOT of artificial seawater
Good Luck with your quest

Aquariums are great, but if you look at the cash strapped Long Beach Aquarium with a planned huge tourist draw, tons of funding and a big tax base it is not that easy. With any place like that charging 25 bucks for a ticket and gouging the same as an amusement park for a bottle of water there will be very few repeat visitors.

This is a huge project and from a taxpayers perspective this is in the same category as stadiums, libraries and other projects that somehow ending up falling in the laps of folks to pay for.

Sorry...off my soapbox
